Introduction

The built environment includes all the aspects of living peoples, this is a type of environment that is made artificially by the humans that lived in a society and also built environment comprises all necessary and basic needs of human being that is needed for living in a proper and also there will be a proper notation of the water, electricity, roads, and transportation system that is basic needs of the humans(Hart et al., 2019).

The built environment is also a modified structure that is according to the needs of the humans in the society like construction of the building for their living, building for their working and also providing the spaces of recreational spaces. These spaces and buildings are made with the proper quality of the material for the construction that makes built environment for a long period also these building needs to be risk-free and hazards free so that there will be no kind of fear and people live comfortably.

The material that is needed for the construction of the built environment is to be used should be sustainable with the advancement in sustainable material management for the built environment is required because these materials are advanced and more over trusted with the trademark and easy to reliable with the proper determination helps in making the construction easy and long last(Çimen 2021).

Thesis Statement: how this built environment affects the social and economic condition of the UK and how different sectors of the built environment help in the sustainable development of the economy.

In this essay, we going to read about the different sectors of the built environment and research one project of the construction with the proper investigation of the details of the project with the timelines and also their stakeholders.

Sectors of the Built Environment

The built environment includes all the constructions that are made by humans either this building or any hotel that is built by humans for their comfort and use in which there is the use of a sustainable environment and development of the human society with the proper behaviour so there Build environment mainly consist of three sectors which can be divide to form the whole society and living of the human race:

  1. Residential Building:

this sector of the built environment mainly deals with the housing that includes all the residents where humans live and do their activities on daily basis. This sector also includes the housing with the high-density dwelling or medium dwellings that are required to make houses and buildings and also this includes the alteration and any kind of renovation that is needed in the housing.

  1. Non-residential Building:

This sector includes all the building that is constructed by human and used for non-residential purpose which means these buildings are mainly used for either business purpose or any work purpose. This sector includes all the buildings that are hotels, industry, community, or any private retail of the company. All these buildings are used for the purpose where people stay for less time of the period with the fewer activities of the retails (Xiaobin et al., 2015).

  1. Engineering Construction

This sector is important for the built environment of the society for the people and this includes all the building or the construction which requires high knowledge of the construction also with the deeper knowledge of the construction. This sector of construction has specialist specialists and also most of the work in this sector comes from the government. This sector includes bridges, electricity, roads, water, dams, sewerage, ports, rails, mining, and telecommunication the project requires a special degree and is done by Engineers.

Case Study of Medway River Bridge

The Medway River Bridge project has a background with the rational features of the bridge and the condition of the environment. This project is related to the engineering sector of the built environment that includes all the important and government-fundedprojectsthat are done with the prior permission of the government that has been taken from the government of the UK.

The project of Medway river Bridge comprises many spans with 12 spans and the length of the bridge is 953 M and made on the longest river in the southern region. The initial tender which was located in the location of the bridge is just making a crossing of the balanced cantilever bridge but when there is analysed properly with the client’s programmes it is found that due to the climatic condition there is a tight delivery schedule for the bridge and the contractor for this construction is chosen BAM Nuttal who choose the alternative solution that they will be used like box girder bridge with a cast of the concrete in-situ. But these techniques were not so regularly used in construction techniques since the 1970s after the benefit that it provides flexibility to the construction(Opoku et al., 2015).

This project is started in the 1970s and the contractor for this project is chosen BAM Nuttal who was a very famous and reliable company in the UK the construction project which was given to the contractor was not going to be very easy due to the bridge that is constructing over the River, which is the largest river of the south region of England. This project when introduced with the discussion of the cast of the bridge.

The design of the bridge is including the engagement with the post-tensioning in the structure of the bridge and there will be a collaboration of the contractor that enhance the supply chain during the construction and there is the process of the pre and post-tensioned details are taken and included in the design(Xiaobin et al., 2015).

When there is the construction of the bridge is going on there is a decision about the critical concrete mix which was a success by Hanson developed the trialled concrete design in the project of C40/50. The mixture of the concrete includes 50% Regen GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) and modified polycarboxylate and lignosulphonate-based water that reduce the water dryness capacity of the concrete and helps in the summertime and prevent it from becoming dry in the summer month and this makes easy construction of the bridge in a project. The main activity which was included in the project is the design of the bridge and this is important because of the weather conditions that are important for the project construction of the project(Opoku et al., 2015).

Project Lifecycle

The project lifecycle can be defined as the sequence of the activities of the project that took place while the progress of different phases of the project and also this includes different phases of completion of the project.

  1. Initiation:

This phase of the project has the introduction of the project and also there is a decision taken about the initiation of the project and the project from the government about the Bridge and also there is a search the contractors for the construction with the efficiency of the engineers.

  1. Planning

In this phase of the project, there is a determination of the resources and activities that are required to do in the project according to the project objectives. There is also the determination of the activities and timeframes that are taken by each activity and task which is very important for determining fix time for the activity and also there is a need for budget allocation by proper estimation of the equipment of the project and the labour as well material required for the construction project of bridge (Renedo et al., 2018).

  1. Execution

This phase of the project is important and also has the demand of the workforce and activities that are required to complete the project within the properly given period of the project so that the task and overall project take less time.

  1. Closure

This is the phase where all the phases are completed and need to close all the work with the inspection of each activity and task with proper timeframes and also the closure of the project is done with follow the rules and regulations of the government(Renedo et al., 2018).
